How to tell a strong from a weak day master, and what are favorable elements: understanding the two most central judgments in BaZi in one article

When reading BaZi, the first step is never to ask how this year will go, but to determine two things first: whether the day master is strong or weak, and which of the five elements are favorable to this chart. If these two judgments are wrong, every later inference will be off.

This article does not discuss the mystical; it only sets out judgment steps you can follow.

BaZi is the year, month, day and hour of birth, each matched with a pair of heavenly stems and earthly branches, making four pillars and eight characters. Among these, the heavenly stem of the day pillar represents the person themselves, called the day master or day element. For example, if the day pillar is Yi Chou, the day master is Yi Wood.

The other seven characters are all the environment relative to the day master: those that generate me, those I generate, those that overcome me, those I overcome, and those of the same kind as me. These five relationships are the root of the ten gods — resource, output and hurt, officer and seven killings, wealth, and peer and robbery.

The essence of the judgment is to ask one question: within the whole chart, does this day master receive more support or more drain. Four commonly used criteria:

One, obtaining the command: whether the earthly branch of the birth month, the month command, generates or supports the day master. Yi Wood born in a spring month, Yin or Mao, is at its strongest when in command; born in an autumn month, Shen or You, it is overcome by metal and loses a large part from the start.

Two, obtaining ground: whether the day branch and the other earthly branches contain a root for the day master, whether in the main qi or a hidden stem of the same kind. A day master with a root will not be too weak even if the month command is unfavorable.

Three, obtaining generation: whether the chart contains many resource stars, those that generate me. With much resource, the self is supported.

Four, obtaining assistance: whether there are many peers and robbers, those of the same kind. Those of the same kind help the self, but too many will contend for wealth.

If these four are mostly favorable, the chart leans strong; otherwise it leans weak. Borderline cases are common, so traditionally one also looks at climate adjustment and overall flow, not merely at counting a few items.

A strong person has surplus energy and needs release, drain and control: output and hurt, meaning expression and creation, wealth, meaning drain, and officer and seven killings, meaning restraint, are favorable.

A weak person lacks energy and needs generation and support: resource, meaning receiving generation, and peer and robbery, meaning the same kind, are favorable.

In addition, one must look at climate adjustment for cold, warmth, dryness and dampness. For example, a day master born in winter, even if strong, often needs a little fire to warm the chart; dry earth born in summer needs water to moisten it. The true favorable element is the one or two of the five elements that satisfy both the balance of strength and the climate adjustment at the same time.

Direction: the five elements of the favorable elements correspond to directions — Wood to the east, Fire to the south, Earth to the center and southwest, Metal to the west, Water to the north. For the direction you face when seated, the orientation of your desk, and the direction of travel, you can give priority to the favorable direction.

Color and material: Wood pairs with green, Fire with red and purple, Earth with yellow and brown, Metal with white and gold, Water with black and blue. Clothing and home soft furnishings can lean toward the favorable colors.

Timing: if the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the annual cycle belong to the favorable elements, it is usually a year in which one can advance; if they belong to the unfavorable gods, it is better to hold position and first secure what is already in hand.

These are not guarantees, but a way to raise the odds of going with the flow a little. Major decisions should still be based on real conditions.

One, a weak day master means a bad fate. A weak day master is only an energy structure and does not equal poor fortune. A weak day master supported by resource and peers can likewise go smoothly; a strong day master without restraint is instead prone to acting on impulse and ruining matters.

Two, supplement whatever is missing. A chart missing Fire does not necessarily need Fire supplemented — if Fire is an unfavorable god, supplementing it will only create more disorder. What should be supplemented is the favorable element, not what is missing.

Three, without knowing the hour of birth it cannot be calculated. The hour only affects the hour pillar and the starting time of the luck cycles; the year, month and day pillars, the day master, and the direction of the major cycles can still be calculated.
