What is the difference between BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu? Which one should I look at

Neither BaZi nor Zi Wei Dou Shu is more accurate than the other; the difference lies in the questions they are good at answering. BaZi looks at the strength and weakness of the Five Elements and at Da Yun and Liu Nian, answering "when, and of what nature"; Zi Wei looks at the twelve palaces and the Four Transformations of the main stars, answering "which aspect, and what picture." The question itself is a little problematic. The two systems have different structures, different angles of observation, and are good at answering different questions. Rather than asking which is accurate, it is better to ask what you want to know.

BaZi arranges the time of birth into four pillars and eight characters, with the core being the strength and weakness of the five elements in generation and overcoming. It asks: which side does your energy lean toward? Which elements are favourable to you? Is the incoming luck cycle or annual cycle helping you or draining you?

So what BaZi is best at answering is when and of what nature — whether this year is one for advancing or one for harvesting, why these few years have been especially taxing, what kind of work environment would let you move more smoothly.

Its answers lean toward trends and rhythms, and it will not tell you the details.

Zi Wei divides life into twelve palaces — the Life Palace, Wealth, Career, Spouse, Health, Travel and so on — and then places more than a hundred stars into the various palaces. The core is which main star sits in which palace, and which palaces the four transformations (transformation of wealth, of power, of fame, of obstruction) pull on.

So what Zi Wei is best at answering is which aspect and what kind of picture — where your wealth comes from, what kind of person you will meet in love, whether your career is self-created or relies on an organisation.

Its answers lean toward concrete scenes, with a clear structure that is easy to match to your situation.

One practical approach is: first use BaZi to establish the constitution, then use Zi Wei to see where it lands.

BaZi tells you whether this year is overall strong or weak, whether you should advance or hold; Zi Wei tells you which palace that force will land in — Wealth, Career or Spouse. Layering the two gives a far more concrete conclusion than reading one alone.

If the two give opposite conclusions, it is usually not that one of them is wrong, but that there is a problem with the birth hour. Get the hour wrong and the palaces in Zi Wei shift entirely, and the hour pillar in BaZi is wrong as well.

In BaZi, even when the birth hour is unknown, the day master, the month command, and the luck cycles and annual cycles can still be used, since these are not affected by the hour pillar; only the hour pillar column should be treated as a reference.

Zi Wei Dou Shu is more troublesome — the position of the life palace is determined directly by the birth hour, so if the hour is wrong the entire chart cannot be used. Therefore, those who are unsure of their birth hour are advised to start with BaZi.
